Mario the plumber EN free pattern

 

Hello, I would like to inspire you with my pattern for this popular plumber.

I made the Mario for my son some time ago. Read the pattern before you start to ensure you have all materials you need.

In my opinion the pattern is for intermediate crocheters.

Abbreviations (USA terminology):

• MR = magic ring; instead of MR you may crochet ch2 and insert the hook in 2nd chain
• st = stitch
• sl st = slip stitch
• sc = single crochet
• ch = chain
• tch = turning chain (at the end of a row)
• inc = increase - 2 sc in one stitch
• dec = decrease - 2 sc decreased to one stitch
• (..) = repeat the pattern in brackets given number of times
• [..] = total number of stitches at the end of the round / row
• rnd = round
• BLO = back loop only
• FLO = front loop only

MATERIALS:

Himalaya Dolphin Baby (HDB) - one skein of each colour should be enough:

- blue no 327 for the trousers

- red no 318 - for the shirt and cap

- brown for the shoes

- grey for the soles

- white for the hand 

- beige for the head, ears and nose

- YarnArt Jeans Plus (YAJP) - brown for the hair 

- crochet hook 4 mm for yarn HDB and YAJP

- pieces of felt for making face parts

- plastic PVC tube to stiffen the neck

If you don't have specific yarn, don't worry. You may work with any yarn you want, but adjust crochet hook and some parts of the toy (e.g. face parts). For YarnArt Jeans I use 2 or 2.25 mm crochet hook (it depends on your way of crocheting - more tightly or loosely).

Keep practicing and don't give up! Practice makes perfect, as they say ;) The most important thing is that we enjoy crocheting :D 

Mario is crocheted from bottom-up (from shoes ot the head).

SHOE and LEG

Start with a SOLE, grey HDB 

Rnd 1: 8 ch, insert the hook from 2nd chain from hook and crochet around a chain: 5 sc, 1 hdc, 5 hdc in last chain, then on the other side of the chain: 1 hdc, 5 sc [17]

Rnd 2: inc, 5 sc, 5 inc, 5 sc, inc [24]

Rnd 3: 7 sc, (1 sc, inc) x 5, 7 sc [29]

Change to brown colour and start the SHOE.

Rnd 4: back loop only (BLO), 29 sc [29]

Rnd 5: 7 sc, (2 sc, inc) x 5, 7 sc [34]

Rnd 6: dec, 30 sc, dec [32]

Rnd 7: dec, 4 sc, (2 sc, dec) x 5, 4 sc, dec [25]

 

Put the INSERT into the sole. It is better to adjust the insert size to your toy.

I made the insert with thick felt. 

TEMPLATE

I attach the tempate for eyes, moustache, eyebrows and shoe insert. Print it on A4 paper, 100% or use it and adjust to your toy.

Stuff the leg as you go through next rounds.

Rnd 8:  5 sc, (1 sc, dec) x 5, 5 sc [20]

Rnd 9: 5 sc, 5 dec, 5 sc [15]

Change to blue. We make trousers. Firstly crochet the first LEG.

Rnds 10-19: 15 sc [15]

If you have the problem how to join the legs, I recommend you to watch e.g. my tutorial for SMURF:

Finish the first leg (I) and cut the yarn. Now crochet the same way 2nd leg (II) and don’t cut the yarn, because we will join both legs.

 

 

Rnd 20: 4 sc (II), ch 4 (bridge), 15 sc (I), 4 sc (bridge), 11 sc (II) [42]

Rnd 21: 38 sc [38] 

Rnd 22: 4 sc (II), (1 sc, inc) x 2 (bridge), 15 sc (I), (1 sc, inc) x 2 (bridge), 11 sc (II) [42] 

Rnds 23-29: 42 sc [42]

Then crochet the body and we continue crocheting the trousers in FLO from rnd 30. 

BODY / BLOUSE

In rnd 30 I start the red blouse. You may cut the blue yarn but you will have to join it while crocheting the upper part of the trousers in FLO (front loop only). I don't cut the blue yarn and join the red. 

If you find it awkward to crochet with the blue yarn still attached, cut it off and reattach it later. 

Rnd 30 = rnd 1 of the blouse: BLO, red HDB, start the body (red blouse), 42 sc [42]

This round is count now as Rnd 1 of the shirt. Stuff the body as you go through the following rounds.

Rnd 2-5: 42 sc

Rnd 6: (5 sc, dec) x 6 [36]

Rnd 7: (4 sc, dec) x 6 [30] 

Rnd 8: (3 sc, dec) x 6 [24] 

Rnd 9: (2 sc, dec) x 6 [18] 

Rnd 10: (2 sc, dec) x 6 [18]

 

HEAD

Change to beige. Now count the round as rnd 1.

Rnd 1: 12 inc [24] 

Rnd 2: (3 sc, inc) x 6 [30]

Rnd 3: (2 sc, inc, 2 sc) x 6 [36]

Rnd 4: (5 sc, inc) x 6 [42]

Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc, 3 sc) x 6 [48]

Rnd 6: (7 sc, inc) x 6 [54]

Rnd 7-13: 54 sc [54] 

 

Align the marker - it should go at the centre back (along head) - this is because we have to make the decreases symmetrically in rnd 14. 

Don't forget to stuff while crocheting.

 

Now you have the marker at the centre back (you can see that this round is a mirror image - the decrease will narrow the sides of the head, and the 4 sc are at the front of the face): 

Rnd 14: 13 sc, (dec, 1 sc) x 4, 4 sc, (1 sc, dec) x 4, 13 sc [46] 

Rnd 15-19: 46 sc [46]

I insert the plastic tube to stiffen the head (before I close the head opening). You need to adjust the length of the tube (my tube goes from the Mario's bottom part - where I joined the legs, to the head).

 

 

 

Rnd 20: (21, dec) x 2 [44]

Rnd 21: (9 sc, dec) x 4 [40]

Rnd 22: (8 sc, dec) x 4 [36]

Rnd 23: (4 sc, dec) x 6 [30]

Rnd 24: (3 sc, dec) x 6 [24]

Rnd 25: (2 sc, dec) x 6 [18]

Rnd 26: (1 sc, dec) x 6 [12]

Rnd 27: 6 dec [6] 

Stuff and close the opening.

 

 

HAND / GLOVE

white HDB.

Make the tumb first:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]

Rnds 2-4: 6 sc [6] 

Cut the yarn. 

 

Now start the hand.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]

Rnd 2: 6 inc [12]

Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 [18]

Rnd 4: (1 sc, inc, 1 sc) x 6 [24]

Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) x 6 [30]

Rnd 6: 30 sc [30]

Rnd 7: (3 sc, dec) x 6 [24]

Rnd 8: (2 sc, dec) x 6 [18]

In rnd 9 join the thumb. 

 

For the left hand: 

Rnd 9: join the thumb: 3 sc [through the inner side of the thumb and the hand], (1 sc, dec) x 2, 9 sc [16]

Rnd 10: 3 sc [along unworked stitches of the thumb], 13 sc [16]

Rnd 11: (2 sc, dec) x 4 [12] 

Rnd 12: FLO, 12 hdc

Stuff the hand.

In BLO of rnd 12 I start the arm (red yarn).

 

For the right hand:

Rnd 9: 9 sc, (dec, 1 sc) x 2, join the thumb: 3 sc [through the inner side of the thumb and the hand] [16]

Rnd 10: 13 sc, 3 sc [along unworked stitches of the thumb] [16]

Rnd 11: (dec, 2 sc) x 4 [12] 

Rnd 12: FLO, 12 hdc

Stuff the hand.

In BLO of rnd 12 I start the arm (red yarn).

ARM

Red HDB, add stuffing as you go through following rounds.

Rnd 1: BLO, 12 sc  

Rnds 2-10: 12 sc [12] 

Rnd 11: 6 dec [6]

Stuff. 

 

 

Sew the arms to the body - be careful to sew in right direction regarding the thumbs (right / left hand) and feet (front/back part of the shoe).

TROUSERS

blue HDB. Continue crocheting the trousers.

Rnd 30: FLO 42 sc

Rnds 31-33: 42 sc through both loops

Cut the yarn and fasten off with TIP: invisible finish

Then start the flap. Use markers to mark the beginning and end of the flap.

FRONT FLAP

Mark the first and the last of 14 stitches with markers (so that the front flap is symmetrically placed on the front of the trousers). Work in rows. 

Row 1-2: 14 sc, 1 tch, turn 

Row 3: dec, 10 sc, dec [12]

 

At the back there is no back flap but braces.

BRACES

Each brace counts 4 stitches, so count 8 stitches at the back part of the trousers (braces are next to each other, so keep them symmetrically placed). Work in rows.

 

 

Each brace: 

Rows 1-16: 4 sc

Row 17: 2 dec

Row 18: dec 

The braces will be crossed. 

  

 Adjust the length of your braces to your toy. 

 

Make the buttons. 

Button (x2)

Yellow HDB 

6 sc in MR.

If you wand to use other yarn, try to adjust making more rows, e.g. Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR, Rnd 2: 6 inc [12] etc. 

You may also use the real button. 

 

CAP

Rnd 1: 8 sc in magic ring [8]

Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) x 4 [12]

Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 [18]

Rnd 4: (1 sc, inc) x 9 [27]

Rnd 5: (1 sc, inc, 1 sc) x 9 [36]

Rnd 6: (3 sc, inc) x 9 [45] 

Rnd 7: (2 sc, inc, 2 sc) x 9 [54]

Rnd 8: (5 sc, inc) x 9 [63]

Rnd 9: (3 sc, inc, 3 sc) x 9 [72]

Rnds 10-12: 24 sc, 24 hdc, 24 sc [72]

Rnd 13: (6 sc, dec) x 3, 24 hdc, (dec, 6 sc) [66]

Rnd 14: 21 sc, 24 hdc, 21 sc [68]

Rnd 15: (5 sc, dec) x 3, 24 hdc, (dec, 5 sc) x 3 [60]

Rnd 16: 18 sc, 24 hdc, 18 sc [60]

Rnd 17: (4 sc, dec) x 3, 24 hdc, (dec, 4 sc) x 3 [54]

Rnd 18: 15 sc, 24 hdc, 15 sc [54]

Cut the yarn.

 

CAP BRIM (make 2)

red HDB.

Work in rows. Start with ch 25.

Row 1: ch 25, insert the hook in 2nd chain from hook and crochet 24 sc

Rows 2-7: 24 sc [24]

Row 8: dec, 20 sc, dec [22]

 

Then join the edges of two parts of the brim with slip stitches.

Cut the felt to the size of the brim. I use thick felt. You may use any thick material you like (better waterproof).

Add the felt and then join the brim with the cap using slip stitches. 

Insert the hook through 3 edges (2 edges of the brim and the edge of the cap). 

 

  

 

 

FACE

I prepared felt parts - see TEMPLATE at the beginning of the pattern.

If you use felt parts, glue them (firstly pin to set their position). I like to use the magic glue.

 

 

EYES

 

NOSE

Rnd 1: 8 sc in MR

Rnd 2: 8 inc [16]

Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 8 [24]

Rnds 4-6: 24 sc

Rnd 7: (1 sc, dec) x 8 [16]

Rnd 8: 8 dec [8]

Stuff the nose, fasten off.

Sew the nose between rnds 12-13 of the head (between eyes).

Firstly pin all the face parts before you sew the nose / glue the eyes, eyebrows and moustache.

EARS

Beige HDB. Make 2.

Rnd 1: 8sc in MR

Rnd 2: 8 inc [16]

Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 8 [24]

Rnd 4: 24 sc

Rnd 5: (1 sc, dec) x 8 [16]

Rnd 6: 16 sc [16]

Rnd 7: 8 dec [8]

Don't stuff the ears.

Sew the ears between rnds 12-14 at the side of the head.

If you want, you may try to crochet the moustache (however I like felt moustache). 

MOUSTACHE

Black HDB.

Row 1: ch 14, insert the hook in 2nd chain from hook and work 13 sc, turn [13]

Row 2: sl st, (sc, dc) in one st, sc, [(dc, tr, dc) in one st, sc)] x 4, (dc, sc) in one st, sl st. 

 

HAIR

I crocheted the hair with brown YarnArt Jeans Plus. 

Work in rows, each row crochet in BLO and make 1 tch in the end.

Row 1: ch 15, insert the hook in 2nd chain from the hook and crochet 14 sc, 1 tch, turn [14]

Row 2: 13 sc, ch 1, 1 tch, turn

Row 3: 14 sc, 1 tch, turn

Row 4: 13 sc, ch 1, 1 tch, turn

Repeat rows 3-4 to obtain the width you need to cover the back part of the head.

Pin the hair and stretch a bit behind the ears to fit the head shape.

 

SIDEBURNS

Make 2

The pattern is the same as hair but crochet only rows 1-3. 

Pin the hair and sideburns before sew it to the head. 

 

The Mario is finished!
