CUTIES - Lucian the fox FREE PATTERN

Hi, this time I present you Lucian the fox from my THE CUTIES series :-) Recently I released video about the CUTIES on YouTube in my series Amigurumi Workshop. In part 1 I present you Boris the beaver, Sophia the owl and Lucian the fox. I give you a short tutorial how I crochet the cuties' eyes and fox ears. So visit my YouTube, subscribe chanel and blog! Thumbs up and crochet! ;-)

***
Here is the video:

As for the fox, I worked with YarnArt Jeans: orange no 77 (main yarn, for body and paws)
The second yarn is white Alize Softy for tummy. I used crochet hook 2.5 mm.
Ears are made with Yarn Art Jeans - main orange yarn and inner part dark brown no 70 (the same yarn as for Boris' body)
Eyes are made with YarnArt Jeans yellow and black and crochet hook 2 mm.

In my pattern, in even-numbered rounds, I divided scs to obtain almost perfect round (not hexagonal shape): e.g. instead of (2 sc, inc) I crochet: (1 sc, inc, 1 sc).

HEAD & BODY

Pattern is similar to my other Cuties but I work with two yarns - orange and white, so I have to change yarn color in the rounds.
Start with white Alize Softy and in rnd 3 change color to orange YarnArt Jeans.
Read the tip: How to change yarn color in a middle of a round/row

Rnd 1: white, 6 sc in MR [6]
Rnd 2: 6 inc [12]
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 3, 1 sc, change to orange: inc, (1 sc, inc) x 2, 1 sc, inc (change to white in the second sc of increase) [18]
In next rounds I will change to white at the beginning of new round, so don't finish the last orange sc in the round, grab white yarn and pull through two orange loops on the hook and work 1 sc (it will be the first white st of new round). Then I change to orange again, so don't finish the last white sc in the round, grab orange yarn and pull through two white loops on the hook and work 1 orange sc.
I cut the yarns while changing colors and secure them inside the body on the wrong side.
Rnd 4: white (1 sc, inc, 1 sc) x 3, change to orange (1 sc, inc, 1 sc) x 3 [24]
Rnd 5: white (3 sc, inc) x 3, orange (3 sc, inc) x 3 [30]
Rnd 6: white (2 sc, inc, 2 sc) x 3, orange (2 sc, inc, 2 sc) x 3 [36]
Rnd 7: white (5 sc, inc) x 3, orange (5 sc, inc) x 3 [42]
Rnd 8: white (3 sc, inc, 3 sc) x 3, orange (3 sc, inc, 3 sc) x 3 [48]
Rnd 9: white (7 sc, inc) x 3, orange (7 sc, inc) x 3 [54]
Rnd 10: white (4 sc, inc, 4 sc) x 3, orange (4 sc, inc, 4 sc) x 3[60]
Rnd 11: white (9 sc, inc) x 3, orange (9 sc, inc) x 3 [66]
Rnd 12: white (5 sc, inc, 5 sc) x 3, orange (5 sc, inc, 5 sc) x 3 [72]

I continue working with two colors till the end of rnd 18 (I wanted to obtain two colors fifty-fifty when you look at the fox side-face). But if you think there should be fewer rounds of white color, adjust it and start working only with orange yarn in particular round.
Rnds 13-18: white 36 sc, orange 36 sc [72]
Rnds 19-25: orange 72 sc [72]
Rnd 26: (5 sc, dec, 5 sc) x 6 [66]
Rnd 27: (9 sc, dec) x 6 [60]
Rnd 28: (4 sc, dec, 4 sc) x 6 [54]
Rnd 29: (7 sc, dec) x 6 [48]
Rnd 30: (3 sc, dec, 3 sc) x 6 [42]
Rnd 31: (5 sc, dec) x 6 [36]
Rnd 32: (2 sc, dec, 2 sc) x 6 [30]
Rnd 33: (3 sc, dec) x 6 [24]
Rnd 34: (1 sc, dec, 1 sc) x 6 [18]
Rnd 35: (1 sc, dec) x 6 [12]
Rnd 36: 6 dec [6]

Fasten off, close the opening and weave in loose yarn ends.

EARS

I made ears in two versions:
  • version 1 - I made it at the beginning, because firstly I wanted to crochet ears in one piece. This version is made in one piece, based on changing color yarns within rounds, but it is not so perfect for me (look at picture below).
  • version 2 - and I prefer this version - is based on two parts crocheted separately and sewed.

EAR (make 2) - version 1

Start with orange yarn.
Rnd 1: 3 sc in magic ring [3]
Rnd 2: 3 inc [6]
Rnd 3: 2 sc, inc, 3 sc [7]
Rnd 4: 3 sc, change to brown : inc, change to orange: 3 sc [8]
Rnd 5: 1 sc, inc, 1 sc, brown : 2 inc, orange: 1 sc, inc, 1 sc [12]
Rnd 6: 4 sc, brown: 4 sc; orange : 4 sc [12]
Rnd 7: 2 sc, inc, 1 sc, brown : 4 sc, orange: 1 sc, inc, 2 sc [14]
Rnd 8: 3 sc, inc, 1 sc, brown : 2 sc, inc, 1 sc, orange: 1 sc, inc, 3 sc [17]

EAR (make 2) - version 2  (I prefer this one)

In my Amigurumi Workshop - the Cuties part 1 - I show you short tutorial about crocheting  version 2 of ears. Written pattern is below.

Ear (orange part)

Rnd 1: 3 sc in MR [3]
Rnd 2: 3 inc [6]
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 3 [9]
Rnd 4: 9 sc [9]
Rnd 5: (2 sc, inc) x 3 [12]
Rnd 6: 12 sc [12]
Rnd 7: (3 sc, inc) x 3 [15]
Rnd 8: 15 sc [15]
Rnd 9: (4 sc, inc) x 3 [18]

EAR (inner part - dark brown)

Work in rows with no turning chains at the end of each round.
Row 1: ch 5, insert the hook in 2nd st from hook and work 4 sc [4]
Row 2: 4 sc [4]
Row 3: 2 dec [2]
Row 4: dec [1]
Work 4 sc on the left side, then ch 1 and 4 sc at the bottom (through both parts: dark brown and orange, inner part should be in the centre of orange outer part), then ch 1 and 4 sc on the right side, finish with 1 sc on the appex.
Finally sew left and right side of inner part to the orange part (bottom is already attached). Be careful not to sew through both surface of the orange ear, but only through the first one; the seam should be inside the ear).

PAW (make 4)

Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR [6]
Rnd 2: 6 inc [12]
Rnd 3: (5 sc, inc) x 2 [14]
Rnd 4: (6 sc, inc) x 2 [16]
Rnds 5-7: 16 sc [16]
Rnd 8: (2 sc, dec) x 4 [12]
Rnd 9: 12 sc [12]

Add some stuffing.
Bend the piece in half. Close the opening by working 6 sc hooking through the stitches of opposite sides. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

EYE (make 2)

In Amigurumi Workshop video I show you tutorial for the eyes. Written pattern is below.

Version 1 - flat

Crochet hook 2 mm.
We start from the pupil (black yarn)  and then we change color to crochet iris.
Rnd 1: 8 sc in MR [8]
Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) x 4 [12]
Rnd 3: 1 sc, inc, (1sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in one st, inc, 1 sc, change color: (1 sc, inc) x 3, 1 sc.
Fasten off (I do invisible finish), weave in yarn ends.

I work the edging using black thin thread and crochet hook 1 mm (if you want to make black frame for the eyes, as in the original cutie creature). I work 2 sc in each stitch.
Finally I embroider white reflections in the centre of each eye.

Version 2 - 3D eyes

If you want to make 3D eyes, you may use safety eyes.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR [6]
Rnd 2: 6 inc [12]
Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 [18]
Rnds 4-6: 18 sc [18]
Rnd 7: (1 sc, dec) x 6 [12]
Rnd 8: 6 dec [6]

TAIL / BRUSH

I made two versions of brush.
When I started working on the tail, I crocheted smaller version, but then I decided to make the bigger one. To compare, look at the picture below.

Version 1 - SMALL

Start with orange YarnArt Jeans.
Rnd 1: ch 6, insert the hook in 2nd st from hook and work across the chain: 4 sc, 5 sc in one st, 4 sc, 5 sc in one st [18]
Rnd 2: (2 sc, inc) x 6 [24]
Rnd 3-4: 24 sc [24]
Rnd 5: 5 sc, 4 dec, 11 sc [20]
Rnd 6: 3 sc, 4 dec, 9 sc [16]
Rnd 7: 1 sc, 4 dec, 7 sc [12]
Stuff the tail. I cut the yarn and work invisibe finish.
Change to white Alize Softy:
Rnd 8-9: 12 sc [12]
Rnd 10: (1 sc, dec) x 4 [8]

Add suffing before you close the opening.
Fasten off, weave in loose ends.

Version 2 - BIGGER (I prefer this one)
Start with orange YarnArt Jeans.
Rnd 1: ch 8, insert the hook in 2nd st from hook and work across the chain: 6 sc, 5 sc in one st, 6 sc, 5 sc in one st [22]
Rnd 2: (10 sc, inc) x 2 [24]
Rnd 3: (11 sc, inc) x 2 [26]
Rnd 4: (12 sc, inc) x 2 [28]
Rnd 5-6: 28 sc [28]
Rnd 7: 4 sc, 6 dec, 12 sc [22]
Rnd 8: 22 sc [22]
Rnd 9: 3 sc, 4 dec, 11 sc [18]
Stuff the tail. I cut the yarn and work invisibe finish.
Change to white Alize Softy:
Rnd 10: 18 sc [18]
Rnd 11-12: 18 sc [18]
Rnd 13: (7 sc, dec) x 2 [16]
Rnd 14: (2 sc, dec) x 4 [12]
Add suffing before you close the opening.
Rnd 15: 6 dec [6]
Fasten off, weave in loose ends.

Look at the pictures below how I embroider "zig zag".
Here you can see the tail sewed to the body:

Now all the parts are ready and I have to sew them. I recommend you to pin the parts before sewing.

Finally I will embroider the nose and smile (with black floss).
